Notes from the trenches
The baby is here! I am now a bona fide mother, mum, mummy. It is delicious, exciting, exhausting and fraught with laughter and tears. As there is no more time for elaborately crafted writing, here are a few thoughts gathered over the past few weeks
Sleep
As hoped/expected not that much of an issue for me, I believe partly due to genetics, partly due to attitude (despite the research I am napping around once a day with my baby). I appear to function pretty well on very little sleep, although I do notice some brain functions are reduced (such as remembering what I did that day). On the whole however I feel happy, rested and awake. My husband, not so much. One night of interrupted sleep and he is a full blown zombie. As a result I stand by my original plan and happily take the night shift from midnight onwards.
Babywearing
My least favourite carrier has obviously become my favourite. I am in love with the ring sling: I found it easy to use from the starts, it's so versatile and fits easily into my bag. The wrap is super comfortable and lovely for long walks but boy those metres of material are cumbersome! My baby doesn't like being in a sling for more than 20 minutes unless I'm walking on the beach and wrapping and unwrapping those wreathes of material from my body is just annoying.
Diaper-free babies
Fascinating, fun, time-consuming. The first day I got royally peed and pood on, which I luckily find hilarious. I have absolutely no idea when my baby is signalling, so catching all those Ps takes a big mental commitment to offer the potty at frequent intervals. On the other hand I am simply shocked by how many diapers one small baby goes through, so I'm definitely sticking with this for at least a few more weeks.
More thoughts on all of the above and more to come, depending on baby's willingness to nap!
